The Mediation Effects of Achievement Goals on the Relations between Coaching Behaviors and Exercise Adherence Perceived by Adolescent Players
Jung Koo-In

Abstract
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediation effects of achievement goals in the structural relations of coaching behaviors, achievement goals, and exercise adherence perceived by adolescent players through structural equation model analysis from the perspective of Self-Determination Theory.

METHODS: For that purpose, the current study selected 320 players in physical education and general middle and high schools in Seoul metropolitan area as the final valid sample. For data processing, the investigator tested the fitness of the entire model and also the hypotheses using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0. The findings were as follows.

RESULTS: First, coaches' autonomy support turned out to have positive effects on mastery-approach, performance-approach, and exercise adherence. Second, controlling coaching behaviors had positive effects on performance-approach and performance-avoidance. Third, while mastery- approach and mastery-avoidance of achievement goal orientation had positive impacts on exercise adherence, performance- approach had negative impacts on it. Fourth, mastery- and performance-approach of the achievement goal tendency turned out to have partial mediation effects on the relations between the coach's autonomy support and exercise adherence. Fifth, performance- approach had been shown to have negative partial mediation effects on the relations between controlling coaching and exercise adherence.
CONCLUSIONS: Those findings demonstrate that coaching behaviors to support players' autonomy induce a positive tendency of achievement goals from them and help with their exercise adherence.
